Goniopora sp. – This coral has been growing in Biota’s Florida facility for some time, and we are now offering in-house grown frags.Â
This genus of corals are called “Flowerpot Corals” for good reason. Long, flowing stalks with flower-like polyps at the ends extend from a ball-shaped skeleton. The polyps will be closed when it arrives, but be sure to give it plenty of room to expand, as the tentacles significantly stretch out of the base.Â
Goniopora were at one time called “6 month corals” because many wild collected specimens don’t do well in captivity. Thanks to aquaculture and the invention of coral foods, many reefers are able to keep this unique and beautiful genus. Aquacultured varieties like this Biota Granny Smith Goniopora have proven over the years to be much better suited to aquarium life than their wild cousins.Â
The Biota Granny Smith is a lagoon type Goniopora. This species prefers gentle, moderate water flow and low to medium light. Take care to slowly acclimate it to the lighting in your aquarium, as it is prone to bleaching in bright light. We recommend regular feedings of micro coral foods like Goniopower, Coral Frenzy, and Reef Roids.Â
